Q: Please could you tell me how do you paint a skirting and door frame when these have already been stained. Is there something I paint on the wood before painting it? I would be grateful for any help or tips. - Mark

A: Wood primer is what you need here, it will stop the woodstain from leeching into a water-based emulsion as it dries, discolouring your carefully chosen colour. Two coats is probably safest. The first coat will probably take on the colour of the stain, but will seal it in. The second coat will make sure that all of the stain stays where it is. Once the primer is dry you will be able to paint over with any normal water-based paint.
